Because of the influence of the Muslim culture, Zanzibar does not have a typical western night life. This is however gradually changing, to accomodate the needs of the growing number of tourists visiting the islands.
There are a few Discos around town where most of the rich, younger generation of Zanzibaris, frequent at nights for some fun. These include the Garage Club (next to the Fisherman Restaurant), the Komba Discotheque at Bwawani Hotel and Starehe Club. The latter has been known to be only for the strong hearted!
For those of you not wanting a hectic evening, Blues at the Forodhani waterfront, the roof-top bar at the Africa House, Zi Bar (next to the Victoria Guest House) and the Msasani Bar at the Serena Inn are also good places to meet up for a drink.
The Fisherman Resort near the Airport (15 minutes from town) has an in-house band, so if you fancy something out of town, this might be a good place to check out.
For a drink by the sea, Pichy's Pizzeria and Bar, and Blues Restaurant are good places to go to.
If you are looking for some form of local entertainment, it is a good idea to check at the Old Fort for schedules of traditional music performances and Zanzibar dance classes.
You should try and see a 'Ngoma' - local drumming and dancing and also a 'Taarab' - a singing orchestra unique to the island, comprising a blend of Arab, African and Indian influences. The Serena Inn has a 'Swahili Night' with a Swahili Buffet and exotic Taarab music played by Zanzibar's best.
