Taxis can be hired near Kilosa building (in the vicinity of the old Post Office) and near Majestic Cinema. It is also possible to catch a taxi from the Airport/harbour.
'Dala dalas' (pick-up trucks converted into buses) can be caught at the market or near Mnazi Mmoja hospital. These unique 'buses' can take you to the airport and to other areas of urban Zanzibar.
They carry 14 people at a time and you do not have too much space to stretch yourself. The cost of travel depends on your destination. Once you know your destination you look for the dala dala that displays the alphabet of the area you are heading for.
Dala dalas are much cheaper than taxis, but they lack the latter's comfort. Dala dalas are used mainly by the locals and you seldom see tourist on them.
Another type of Zanzibar's transport vehicle is the 'Mbavu za mbwa' . These are the buses that go to the rural areas of Zanzibar. They are used mainly by farmers to bring in their produce from different parts of Zanzibar, to the market in town. The farmers than buy goods from town and take them back to their villages. You can see these buses at Darajani Central Bus Park.
These buses are numbered in accordance to the final destination of the route. These buses can be hired in advance for a day if a group of people want to go to a destination along the buses route (e.g. on a picnic).
The person who hires the bus is expected to provide food and drink for the driver and conductor, who remain with the party until they decide to depart.
There are several companies that hire out cars, motorcycles and bicycles. You will need an International license to rent a motor vehicle.
As a warning, the local Traffic Police make many random checks all along Zanzibar's roads, so be sure all your documents are in order.
One rental company has an office at the old Post Office in town. You can also arrange for a rental through your tour operator.
